New Trail for Mount Baldy
(Double click video to start)
As seen in this month's Scuttlebutt:
MOVING MOUNTAINS.
Mount Baldy, the largest dune in the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, has moved more than 1,300 feet over the past 69 years. The 123-foot-high hill has been shifting inland 4 feet per years. "If it continues at this rate, in five years it will begin to bury the parking lot," Zoran Kilibarda, a professor at Indiana University, told the Post-Tribune/ Mount Baldy has changed from a transverse dune -- long and straight, with a steep slope -- to a U-shaed parabolic dune. It's also shrinking. The natural movement of the sand has been interrupted by the Michigan City harbor breakwall, which was built at the beginning of the 20th century. In 1996, a 50-year program began, calling for sand to be dumped onto the dune every five years. More will be added this fall. In addition, the National Park Service has fenced off the dune's sourth side, rerouting visitors to a less-destructive trail.
Watch this video to learn more about the dune and its new pathway.

Maverick

If, for some reason, you’ve ever wanted to plummet 100 feet at a 95-degree angle, be sure to find your way to Sandusky, Ohio’s Cedar Point Amusement Park this summer to experience its newest rollercoaster, Maverick.
During the two-minute, 30-second ride, thrillseekers will lose their stomachs on eight hills. Maverick also features low-to-the-ground maneuvers, three inversions—and its 100-foot first drop is one of the steepest in the world.
But the crown jewel of Maverick, which sits right at the water’s edge, is the 400-foot tunnel. After barreling through the first-of-its-kind “twisted horseshoe roll,” the coaster slows to 5 mph before launching again at 70 mph through the tunnel and up a 74-foot hill. For more info, head to Maverick’s site.
Child Drowning Prevention
This could be our most controversial video ever.
The leading cause of death for children under the age of 5 in Florida, Arizona, Texas and California is accidental drowning. Vigilance and water safety instruction are crucial means of protecting children but is it possible to go too far and teach children at too young of an age?
Child Drowning Prevention has pioneered a new technique to teach children how to right themselves and float safely in the event that they fall into water. But does this new system mean people will be less vigilant and are there hidden drawbacks?
While between jaunts to Singapore and Hamburg, Germany, Lakeland reader Seth Charna managed to find time to squeeze in some time on Lake Erie at Bay Point Marina in Marblehead, Ohio.
Seth sent us this video of his adventures with his family over those two weeks onboard their two Sea Doo's, a 2006 Regal 3360 and a 2006 Regal 1900. It's enough to make us miss the season already.
(Please note: This video is rarted PG-13 for an inappropriate t-shirt slogan.)
Send us your videos of the lakes and we'll feature them here. Or, head over to our message boards and discuss your favorite memories from this summer.

The Privileged View

Watch Ian Coristine in flight as he searches out new islands to photograph and engages in a brief interview at the end.
Ian flies a Challenger aircraft to take his breathtaking pictures. For more information on this aircraft, the Canadian distributor of it has more information here.

New this year, and a first-time showing in Michigan, an exciting new boat called the Innespace Dolphin will be showcased at the 50th Annual Detroit Boat Show. A fully submersible watercraft designed to mimic the look and abilities of a real dolphin, the Innerspace Dolphin is able to perform many freestyle tricks including dives, jumps, and barrel rolls.
It dives up to 5 feet and, when the snorkel is submerged, the engine’s air supply is cut off and the engine will start to decelerate, causing the Dolphin to surface. The positively buoyant Dolphin always pops to the surface and self-rights. Our publisher, Bing O'Meara wants to see your videos for our Captain's Clip section on the left of your screen. For some people, reeling in a 40 pound catfish is as easy as jumping into the water. Watch these "anglers" catching catfish with little more than their bare hands, a pair of sturdy gloves and some bravery.
