The port facilities at Marquette, Michigan’s Presque Isle Harbor and the Lake Superior & Ishpeming Railroad Ore Dock will soon undergo improvements to the tune of around $2.63 million, thanks to a grant from the U.S. Maritime Administration Port Infrastructure Development Program under the Biden-Harris Port Action Plan.
“This project is a collaborative effort between the city, Cleveland-Cliffs, Lake Superior & Ishpeming Railroad and the Superior Watershed Partnership,” said Marquette City Manager Karen Kovacs, reports The Mining Journal. “The SWP staff greatly assisted the city with grant proposal development, so huge kudos to them as well.”
The $1.6 million grant will be joined by matching funds of $750,000 from Cleveland-Cliffs, Inc. and Lake Superior & Ishpeming Railroad. Funds will go to improve port infrastructure, dredge encroaching sediment, enhance coastal restoration along 11,120 feet of Lake Superior and protect road infrastructure.
“The project is expected to begin construction quickly upon obligation of grant funds and those funds will be spent expeditiously once the project starts, with all funds anticipated to be expended by December 2024,” Kovacs added.
