A new contribution of $1 million from the Owens Corning Foundation will help fund the continued development of the Glass City Riverwalk along the Maumee River in Toledo, Ohio. The Riverwalk vision aims to connect Middlegrounds Metropark and Glass City Metropark, as well as several other parks, businesses and neighborhoods in downtown and East Toledo.

“Like the Cannaley Treehouse Village, Riverwalk will be the result of the community coming together around a shared vision,” says Joe Napoli, chairman of the board of the Metroparks Toledo Foundation. “The Owens Corning Foundation’s early leadership support is a demonstration of our community’s commitment to this initiative and adds momentum to one of the most significant projects in our region in decades.”

The Glass City project is one of the largest in Metroparks’ history, and along with helping improve water quality in the Maumee River and Lake Erie, will connect multiple neighborhoods and open up additional green space for the city.

“We are pleased to support the revival of Toledo’s riverfront and continue the positive momentum underway downtown,” says Owens Corning Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Brian Chambers. “This is truly a once-in-a-generation opportunity to transform our community by preserving and providing more equitable access to greenspace for all Toledo residents.”

Phase one of the project started last December between Front St. and the river, and a new bike and pedestrian bridge is currently planned to connect the new park with International Park. Phase two, which will add an ice skating ribbon, adventure play area and more, is slated to start this summer.
