Programs to address the prevention, detection, eradication and control of aquatic and terrestrial invasive species in Michigan are getting support from $3.6 million in grants awarded through the Michigan Invasive Species Grant Program.
Funds will go to support a range of efforts, including investigation and research, enhanced management of species, and new projects and community education. They will also help fund the 28 regional Cooperative Invasive Species Management Area (CISMA), which provides education, outreach and assistance to all 83 counties in Michigan.
“Protecting our water and preserving our environment are essential to ensuring our economy, families, and communities succeed,” says Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. “I am proud to see the DNR, MDARD, and EGLE collaborate to prevent and manage the spread of invasive species in our state. These grants will impact every corner of our state and help all Michiganders thrive.”
This grant cycle marks the seventh year of funding for invasive species programs. In that time, over $25 million has been awarded to support 173 projects.
