Cape Dory Marinaut 220 Pilothouse

Trailerable trawlers have long been popular with boaters who enjoy exploring distant corners of the Great Lakes, but who may not have time for an extended multi-week cruise.

That’s where versatile, easily-towable boats like Cape Dory’s new Marinaut 220 Pilothouse truly come into their own.

The Marinaut 220 Pilothouse packs a lot of capability into its trim 21-foot frame. Its spacious aft cockpit provides plenty of room to fish or soak up the sun, while an available Bimini top provides protection from the midday heat. Owners can also opt for a full canvas camper to accommodate overnight guests.

The main cabin offers large, tinted side windows that open to let in the light and fresh air. The aft cabin door features a standard slide opening and screened window, while the entire bulkhead is removable, allowing owners to completely open the boat on nice days. There is a dinette to port with storage underneath the aft dinette seat, while the forward dinette seat swivels.

The helm faces three large front windows, each equipped with pantographic wipers and gear-driven motors for excellent visibility in any condition. The helm console is neatly laid out, with plenty of space for aftermarket electronics. Aft of the helm seat is the galley with a standard sink and single burner butane stove. The deep galley counter neatly conceals a cavernous storage space. For those who prefer it, an alternative floorplan without a galley provides additional seating options.

With its removable extensions in place, the forward V-berth is nearly 7 feet long, surprisingly wide and quite comfortable. The lack of a cabin bulkhead on the port side gives this space an open, airy feeling, while greatly facilitating access. A portable toilet is located under the center V-berth filler cushion, but most cruisers will take advantage of the available portside rear head upgrade — a rare and unusual option in a boat of this size, and one that represents real value.
