Sportfish yacht meets dayboat.

by Gary Reich

When it comes to sportfishing yachts, there are few names more iconic than Viking.

A new member to the legendary family is the Viking 37 Billfish, a smaller but very capable sportfish with the credentials to raise big fish to the transom and excellent seakeeping abilities, to boot.

Getting out to the canyons — or deep Great Lakes water — is a speedy affair thanks to twin Cummins turbo diesel power. The two six-cylinder common rail diesels churn out a combined 1,100 hp, good for propelling the Billfish up to nearly 35 knots, with a cruising speed in the low 30-knot range. Control of all those ponies happens up on the flybridge, which provides a commanding view of your trolling spread and lounging space for guests via two generous bench seating areas to port and starboard.

A unique lower helm station is situated in the luxurious main salon, which has a U-shaped dinette and additional bench seating. Take three steps below and you’ll find an L-shaped galley to starboard with a two-burner stove, a sink, a microwave/convection oven, refrigeration and plenty of stowage room for provisions. To port is an enclosed head/shower, while forward is the master stateroom. It can be fitted with an island berth or with offset berths more suited to crew napping. Rich upholstery and interior fabrics accent the elegant woodwork and joinery.

The cockpit is where the action happens on any good dayboat or sportfish yacht, and Viking has outfitted the 37 Billfish with features commonly found only on larger yachts and sportfishing machines.  A set of aft-facing benches on the mezzanine provide a great place for keeping an eye on live baits, a trolling spread, or simply enjoying the ride. Large fish lockers hide beneath the cockpit and there’s also a bait freezer and livewell, all of which can be easily used for storage and stocking up for cruising. An opening transom door facilitates boating large catches, and add a swim platform for a joyful day of fun playing in the water.

Erik Krueger, VP at Jefferson Beach Yacht Sales, states, “It’s exciting to see Viking put a smaller model in the marketplace. I’d take this over a high-end center console any day, and it’s perfect for cruising or fishing. A home run.”

The first Viking 37 Billfish will make its inaugural appearance at the 21st Annual Viking VIP Boat Show Preview in February 2017 at the Viking Yacht Service Center in Riviera Beach, Florida.
