New Soo Lock Coming to Sault Ste. Marie

By November 29, 2018No Comments

The New Soo Lock project along the St. Marys River will receive $32 million next year to deepen the upstream approach channel, the U.S Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District recently announced.

“This is the moment we have been waiting for more than 30 years,” says Jim Weakley, president of the Lake Carriers’ Association. “The announcement by the Army Corps that the construction program for the new lock at the Soo will officially begin is the direct result of the tireless efforts of so many people and organizations banding together to update one of the most critical pieces of American infrastructure.”

The project is expected to cost nearly $1 billion and will be completed by 2023. Large vessels use the lock to get from Lake Superior to the lower Great Lakes, as only two of the four locks are operational.
