Thousands Gather in Fight to Decommission Mackinac Pipeline

By April 26, 2018No Comments

Thousands of concerned citizens gathered at the Traverse City Opera House and over 30 satellite locations on April 23 for “Retire Line 5” parties.

The events coincided with the 65th anniversary of the Endbridge pipeline installation which runs under the straits of Mackinac. Participants watched video, music, speeches, and poetry aimed at inspiring people to take action to decommission Line 5.

The event was put on by a group called Oil & Water Don’t Mix. A live recording of the event is available to watch on their website oilandwaterdontmix.org and is available to watch down below. Event organizers hope to raise awareness of the threats posed by Line 5 and mobilize individuals to take action to decommission the pipeline.

The seeds of Oil & Water Don’t Mix were sown in the fall of 2012 when the National Wildlife Federation published a report called “Sunken Hazard: Aging oil pipelines beneath the Straits of Mackinac an ever-present threat to the Great Lakes.”

Participants can find information about upcoming events and actions at oilandwaterdontmix.org.
