If you’ve purchased a fire extinguisher in the past 40 years, you may need to replace it. More than 40 million Kidde fire extinguishers, some of which have been on the market for more than 40 years, have been recalled.
The Consumer Product and Safety Commission (CPSC) says: “The fire extinguishers can become clogged or require excessive force to discharge and can fail to activate during a fire emergency. In addition, the nozzle can detach with enough force to pose an impact hazard.”
Be sure to check fire extinguishers on personal watercraft. If a boater has a recalled extinguisher, they can get a free metal-handled replacement from the CPSC recall website. Kidde warns boaters that the free replacement extinguishers may not fit in the same location as previous fire extinguishers.
