Garmin has decided to heavily invest in the marine side of navigation through the acquisition of Navionics. Navionics is an Italian company known in the marine world for its electronic navigational charts and mobile apps.

“Since our founding, Navionics has been passionate about creating products that enhance the boating experience,” says Giuseppe Carnevali, Navionics founder and president, in a press release. “Garmin shares our passion for serving the marine industry, and is an ideal company to carry the strong brand and reputation of Navionics into the future.”

Navionics’ inventory also includes an extensive repository of nautical charts for oceans, rivers and lakes, developed through proprietary surveys in the field and through satellite imagery and airborne laser scanners. Garmin representatives say they will use Navionics’ content with Garmin’s BlueChart and LakeVu products. Garmin will retain the Navionics brand.
