The Penguin Plunge in Ottawa broke two records this year: Record funds raised and record cold temperatures. Despite digits in the 20s throughout the event, the sixth-annual Penguin Plunge at Heritage Harbor Ottawa Resort had a record 370 participants and more than 2,500 spectators.
The Penguin Plunge at Heritage Harbor attracts residents from Ottawa and nearby towns to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Illinois foundation. This year’s Penguin Plunge, which took place on January 7, raised $161,189.35. Costs for the Plunge are covered by donors and sponsors, so all funds go directly to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The top fundraising team, “Streator Peters,” managed to raise more than $18,000.
“Just when I think it can’t get any better, the support, kindness and generosity of Heritage Harbor, the local community and most importantly the Plungers, exceeds every dream that we have,” says Ashley White, gift officer of community programs for Make-A-Wish Illinois. “This event is the largest external fundraiser for us in the state of Illinois, and the true passion this community has for Make-A-Wish and helping our children with life-threatening medical conditions experience the hope, strength and joy of wish is pure magic. We are beyond grateful to everyone!”
