Book lovers in the Door County area can now meet with other book fiends through Great Lakes/Great Books, a monthly book club that focuses on books with a Great Lakes focus. The Great Lakes/Great Books book club was created through a partnership between the Door County Maritime Museum and Write On, Door County.
Great Lakes/Great Books will meet at 10:30 a.m. the first Thursday of each month at the Maritime Museum. The club will read a variety of fiction, non-fiction and poetry, and will discuss each work with a facilitator from Write On. Although titles have already been chosen through May, they can be changed depending on interest. The first meeting was November 3 and the next is December 1. Titles for the next six months are:
December: “The Windward Shore: A Winter on the Great Lakes,” by Jerry Dennis
January: “Ashes Under Water: The SS Eastland and the Shipwreck that Shook America,” by Michael McCarthy
February: “The Bone House,” by Brian Freeman
March: “Ship Captain’s Daughter: Growing up on the Great Lakes,” by Ann Michler Lewis
April: “Water Music: The Great Lakes State Poetry Anthology Published,” by the Poetry Society of Michigan
May: “The Death and Life of the Great Lakes,” by Dan Egan
Individuals interested in joining Great Lakes/Great Books should call the museum at 920-743-5958.
