Sturgeon Bay Maritime Week Runs July 30 to Aug 13

By July 28, 2016No Comments

A jam-packed two weeks of old and new events begins on July 30 for Sturgeon Bay Maritime Week: A Salute to the U.S. Coast Guard. The celebration, which runs from July 30 to August 13, will highlight the area’s maritime history and honor local past and present Coast Guard personnel. In 2014 Sturgeon Bay was designated as one of 20 official Coast Guard cities in the nation.

Festivities kick off on Saturday, July 30 with a picnic for Coast Guard personnel — active, reserve, retired and veteran — and their families at Sawyer Park. On August 3, tall ships will sail into Sturgeon Bay for an overnight stay. On August 8, the Sturgeon Bay Yacht Club will host the Coast Guard Person of the Year and Mariner Award Dinner: The Person of the Year Award recognizes a local active duty Coast Guardsman who exemplifies the service’s core values, and the Mariner Award honors individuals — living and deceased — who have had a significant impact on the Door County maritime community. Two days later on August 10 is the Harmony by the Bay Summer Concert Series, followed by the Salute to the Coast Guard Golf Tournament four-person scramble and “TGIT” Sail Racing on Thursday, August 11.

The weekend of August 12-13 is packed with waterfront events, many of which coincide with other local festivals. In particular, boaters should check out the Door County Classic and Wooden Boat Festival and the Sikaflex Boat Building Competition.
