According to local groups, a rupture in the 62-year-old “Line 5” crude oil pipeline that runs under the Great Lakes’ Straits of Mackinac could contaminate the local freshwater supply and affect (perhaps more devastatingly) the Charlevoix local craft beer community. To inform the public about Line 5 and the potential risk it poses to the Great Lakes, The Lake Charlevoix Brewing Company is teaming up with the National Wildlife Federation to host the first night of a three-city “Pipeline Watch” film tour on November 2.
The evening will include a free screening of the short documentary “Oil and Water,” followed by a panel discussion.
“Many of my fellow craft brewing operations across the state rely on the same great Michigan water as I do,” says Rich Bergmann, managing partner of the company that owns Lake Charlevoix Brewing Company. “Water is the lifeblood of this emerging industry — the foundation ingredient that has allowed for fantastic growth in this new industry and enhanced Michigan as a tourism destination.
