Researchers and scientists at Indiana University have been awarded a $6 million grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to continue measuring levels of airborne toxic chemicals being deposited into the Great Lakes.
The Integrated Atmospheric Deposition Network project, led by IU professor Ronald Hites, began in 1990 under an agreement between EPA and Environment Canada. The newest grant continues the project until 2019.
The project is collecting air samples at urban stations in Chicago and Cleveland, as well as at regular intervals at master stations on each of the five Great Lakes.
“Cities have a huge impact on the chemical levels, and we want to pin down those sources as the pollutants leak into the lakes,” Hites says.
