Despite taking a significant nosedive within the last 24 months, Great Lakes water levels are once again on the rise.
Two years ago, in January 2013, Lakes Michigan and Huron were at a record low, and have recently gone on a record-breaking rebound. Three of the five Great Lakes have recovered their water levels at a record pace.
According to a recent article on Weather.com, Lake Superior gained 2.3 feet from January 2013 through November 2014, and Lakes Michigan and Huron increased by 3.2 feet during the same period. The increase was the fastest ever recorded for Superior and the second fastest for Huron and Michigan. Experts say it’s the first time since the late 1990s that Michigan, Huron and Superior were all above their averages simultaneously.
The Army Corps forecasts: Lakes Michigan and Huron to be 15-21 inches higher than last year; Lake Superior to remain 9-10 inches over a year ago; Lake Erie to be 5-11 inches deeper than last year; and Lake Ontario about 2-5 inches below last year.
