Four years ago, in July 2010, a 32-foot piece of a vessel was discovered at the World Trade Center site in Lower Manhattan during construction of a parking garage for the new 1 World Trade Center Tower.
Researchers are now saying that the vessel belongs to a ship that sailed during the 18th century, around the time of the start of the Revolutionary War and before the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
According to scientists at Columbia University’s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, who wrote in the July issue of the journal Tree Ring Research, the ships frame came from a Philadelphia-area forest and is identified as a Dutch-designed vessel made to carry passengers and cargo over shallow, rocky water.
This is one ship that carries with it a boatload of American history!
