Could a floating city become Chicago’s next Bean? The multi-million-dollar pitch to build a floating city half a mile off Chicago’s shoreline, called Breakwater Chicago, is quickly gaining public support.

The crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter for Breakwater Chicago reached its $30,000 goal within 36 hours, according to a recent report published in the Chicago Tribune. Within 10 days of being posted to Kickstarter, the pitch had more than $39,000 pledged.

Breakwater is planned as a “luxury yacht meets island resort” — a floating vessel 300 feet long by 100 feet wide, boasting amenities such as a pool, spa, retail shops, bar, restaurants, and a lounge.

The project’s creators say they hope to open Breakwater Chicago just prior to the start of Summer 2015. The project will cost an estimated $23 million.
