The DYC Detroit APBA Gold Cup recently signed a 10-year agreement to keep the prestigious annual Gold Cup races in Detroit. The extension of the Gold Cup in Detroit was signed by the Detroit River Regatta Association (DRRA) and the American Power Boat Association (APBA).
The event has been hosted on the Detroit River for the past 98 years, and this year the race will be held July 11-13. The Gold Cup is the oldest active trophy in motorsports. This year, it with feature live music from local bands, vintage race boats, a car show, and, of course, automotive hydroplanes.
“The rich history and tradition Detroit brings to hydroplane racing make it an ideal home for the Gold Cup for many years to come,” says Mark Wheeler, APBA president.
While the city of Detroit is the guaranteed host of the Gold Cup for the next decade, this year’s event still needs a title sponsor. According to an article published by the Detroit Free Press, the DRRA is still in negotiations for corporate and/or private backing to ensure the race will go off as planned.
“We couldn’t be more thrilled to know that the Gold Cup will be staying in Detroit, where it belongs, hopefully for another hundred years,” says Tom Bertolini, DRRA president.
