Circumnavigating the Great Lakes by Land and Writing

By June 18, 2014No Comments

Poet and performance artist Moheb Soliman has spent the past two years working on a project called Circumnavigating the Great Lakes by Land and Writing where he explores the intersection of geography, nature and culture.

Soliman will present his latest work at the Door County Maritime Museum on June 24. Sponsored by the museum and Write On, Door County, the free event will feature Soliman discussing his experiences circling the entire coast of the Great Lakes, presented in the form of poems and images.

“’Place’ has always been much more of a cultural axis for me than race or class or gender,” Soliman says, “and in the past few years, I’ve come to focus creatively and critically on what I feel is a largely unimagined sphere – the wide nexus between nature and culture that many inhabit in such places as the Midwest. About three years ago, I embarked on a trip around the vast Great Lakes region that sits between the US and Canada out of a desire to substantiate a very uniquely wild yet populated part of our continent. This has since been a steadily evolving writing and performance project”

Soliman was born in Egypt and has lived in Oklahoma, Ohio, Montreal, Toronto, New York and Minneapolis. He received his BA in creative writing and education at the New School for Social Research in New York City and is currently a writer-in-residency at Write On, Door County.

Write On, Door County is a nonprofit organization that aims to promote and nurture the work of writers, spur participation and widen the audience for writing.
