Every year, unknowing swimmers are affected by electrical power leakages in the water. These electric leaks can lead to a tingling sensation on the skin and potential in-water electrocutions known as Electric Shock Drowning (ESD). According to a recent article published in Boating magazine and written by ABYC master technician Mike Telleria, eight ESD-related deaths occurred in 2012 alone, with numerous other deaths thought to be caused by the phenomenon.
To combat and educate on EDS risks, the American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC) has partnered with the Energy Education Council’s Safe Electricity “Teach Learn Care TLC” campaign in an effort to prevent the little-known silent killer. This campaign educates boaters on proper maintenance of electrical systems on boats.
To further reduce risks, a recently awarded grant by the National Fire Protection Association’s Fire Protection Research Foundation lead to an expert investigation for ESD solutions.
