Potential Remains of the Santa Maria Found

By May 27, 2014No Comments

Christopher Columbus sailed west in search of new lands, but what ever happened to the colossal ship, Santa Maria, in which he sailed?

According to an article from Reuters, underwater explorer Barry Clifford believes he has found the wreckage of Columbus’ flagship off the north coast of Haiti. Clifford, a marine investigator who led a reconnaissance expedition to the site, says he wants to begin excavating as soon as the Haitian government approves.

While Clifford and his team of marine explorers say that evidence strongly suggests that the artifacts from the shipwreck off Haiti are from the Santa Maria, other experts and Haitian officials are skeptical that enough of the vessel remains to make a positive match.

According to the article, the wreck was found in 10 to 15 feet of water near a reef about 5 miles offshore.
