According to a new study by the University of Notre Dame, grass carp invading the Great Lakes could pose a potential threat and do significant damage to the Great Lakes.
While there has been much focus on the invasion of Asian carp — including bighead and silver carp — that have the potential to destroy the food chain and ecosystem of the Great Lakes, grass carp also are another threat.
This type of carp also is from Asia and could potentially eat plants needed for freshwater fish habitat. The study shows that grass carp could survive in all five Great Lakes.
