The 4-mile Mighty Mac Swim race across the Straits of Mackinac for 2020 has been canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Michigan health regulations currently limit the number of people at gatherings to 10. More than 400 swimmers were already registered, with 200 on the waiting list. The list filled up in only 11 hours last October when it opened.

“The Governor’s May 18 executive order 2020-92 set the parameters for a decision we felt had to be made before June 1,” says Jim Dreyer, the Mighty Mac Swim executive director. “We deeply regret canceling this epic swim but our disappointment pales in comparison with the sadness we feel regarding the negative and often devastating effects this pandemic is having on lives.”

The race is now scheduled for August 8, 2021. Those who were registered for this year’s race get a 48-hour priority registration when it opens on October 1, 2020. Those who were on the waiting list this year will also be able to sign up 24 hours before the opening date.
