The public can now get an idea of what the new lock at The Soo Locks in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, will look like through a recent virtual reality, 360-degree view that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers recently released.

Engineers have been using virtual reality to help perfect the design of the new lock, which will measure 1,200 feet in length, 110 feet in width and 32 feet in depth. The new lock will be a twin of the Poe, which is currently used by 85% of vessels navigating the 21-foot elevation change separating Lake Superior and Lake Huron.

The first phase of construction deepening the waters in the approach to the lock began in May and is expected to be complete by November 2021. Construction on the lock itself will begin in summer 2022, reports mLive.
