Those who have experienced the Great Lakes know the best beaches aren’t always near saltwater. A recent article from Fodor’s Travel highlights the top 15 best freshwater beaches across the U.S. — no ocean in sight.
Several beloved beaches on our Great Lakes made the list, highlighting why the Great Lakes make for an ideal waterside destination. Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore and its 35 miles of sandy shoreline on Lake Michigan topped the list, along with Grand Haven State Park’s North Shore Beach with miles of golden sand and a town full of local history. Across Lake Michigan, Chicago North Avenue Beach was included in the top beaches, noted for its vibrant energy, sandy beaches and clear water steps from the city’s downtown. On Wisconsin’s lakefront, Kohler-Andrae State Park in Sheboygan was noted as well in the top 15, highlighted for its crystal Lake Michigan waters and majestic sand dunes.
