Mackinaw City Contest Names New Trail

By December 2, 2024No Comments

Mackinaw City hosted a contest to help name a community trail that has been maintained for 20 years, but never named. The trail runs from Mackinaw City marina on Lake Huron through town onto the North Western State Trail, into the woods of Heritage Village and on to the Headlands International Dark Sky Park bordering Lake Michigan.

The new name — Tipp of the Mitt Trail — was submitted by Julie Caswell and selected in the contest by a special committee, reports the Cheboygan Daily Tribune.

“We were just calling it the ‘cross-town trail’ for all those years,” said Village President Pat Wyman, reports the Cheboygan Daily Tribune. “But now that we have the ‘Tip of the Mitt Trail,’ it puts a little more ownership of the trail to the village. It gives us a name to market … when we apply for grants we have a name for it.”
