The Michigan Maritime Museum’s 2026 Lecture Series will start on February 25 with a “History of the Great Lakes in 12 Shipwrecks”. Presented by acclaimed underwater explorer and historian Valerie van Heest, the multimedia program will explore twelve historic shipwrecks, highlighting the evolution of commercial transportation on the Great Lakes, and touching on pivotal events from America’s founding to the modern shipping industry.
Van Heest shares her maritime passion and historic storytelling through books, films, lectures and museum exhibits, and brings a wealth of knowledge along with entertaining and inspiring storytelling to her programs.
The lecture series is made possible by support from the Nielsen-Wells Grant Fund and Mike & Susan Smith. The event starts at 6:30 on Wednesday, February 25, and tickets are free for museum members and $10 for non-members.
