The American Boat & Yacht Council (ABYC) reports a major expansion of opportunities for veterans entering the marine trades. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs education benefits now reimburse fees for nine ABYC certification exams. The change applies to exams taken on or after December 10, 2025, and allows eligible veterans, active‑duty service members, and, in some cases, their dependents to offset certification exam costs using GI Bill benefits.

Approved exams cover core marine technician credentials — such as Advanced Marine Electrical, Marine Engines and Fuel Systems, Marine Corrosion, Marine Standards and U.S. Coast Guard Recreational Boat Regulations — recognized across the recreational boating industry.

ABYC says the expansion supports workforce development as boats become more technologically advanced and demand for certified technicians grows. Veterans can request reimbursement by submitting VA Form 22‑0803 to the VA, helping smooth the path into marine careers.
