The Great Lakes Children’s Museum in Traverse City, Michigan, has launched a new interactive exhibit designed to introduce young visitors to Great Lakes maritime history through hands-on play.
Called “Shipwreck at Curiosity Bay,” the exhibit invites children to climb aboard a replica vessel and explore the science, history and mystery behind regional shipwrecks. Developed with help from maritime experts and volunteers, the installation is inspired by real wrecks in Northern Michigan waters and encourages kids to investigate clues, try knot-tying and even pilot the ship.
The exhibit blends STEM learning with imaginative play, highlighting topics such as freshwater ecosystems, invasive species and ship design while fostering problem-solving and collaboration.
Located at the museum’s Curiosity Place inside the Grand Traverse Mall, the experience is included with regular admission ($9 for ages 1 and up). The museum says the goal is to connect families to the region’s rich boating heritage while inspiring curiosity about the Great Lakes.
