By May 26, 2026No Comments

The Michigan Clean Marina Program has certified Hartshorn Municipal Marina in Muskegon and South Haven Municipal Museum Marina as Michigan Clean Marinas. The certification is valid for three years through 2029. In addition, 14 marinas have been recertified for the next five years, the marinas are: Elmwood Twp. Marina, Traverse City; Lambrecht Marina, Harrison Twp.; Muskegon Yacht Club, Muskegon; Northwest Marina Yacht Basin, Charlevoix; Petoskey City Marina, Petoskey; Pier 1000 Marina, Benton Harbor; Port Sanilac Marina, Port Sanilac; Safe Harbor Grande Isle Marina, Grand Haven; Skipper Buds – Lake Fenton, Fenton; South Haven Black River Park Municipal Marina, South Haven; South Haven Northside Municipal Marina, South Haven; South Haven Southside Municipal Marina, South Haven; The Moorings Association, New Buffalo; and Walstrom Marine, Cheboygan.

The addition of the new marinas along with the rectification of 14 brings the total count to 105 Michigan marinas that have obtained Certified Clean Marina status. Participants in the program voluntarily pledge to maintain and improve Michigan’s waterways by reducing or eliminating releases of harmful substances and help boaters in best practices in pollution prevention. Training and certification requirements address key topics such as siting considerations, marina design and management, stormwater management, boat maintenance and repair, petroleum control, aquatic invasive species, sewage handling, waste containment, disposal and recycling, and laws and regulations.

“Marinas like these and the many others who participate in this disciplined program show they are aware of and practice good environmental and business stewardship practices” says Mark Breederland, Michigan Sea Grant Extension educator and chair of the Michigan Clean Marina Foundation Board. “The program is a win-win by implementing and certifying on-the-dock practices to minimize potential pollution and encouraging boaters to also take good care of the water and within the marina.”
