The Great Loop

A Midland Reset

By July 23, 2025January 14th, 2026No Comments

The last week was a nice reset for us. Upon exiting the Trent-Severn Waterway, we made a minor detour over to Midland, Ontario. A handful of loopers will stop in Midland, but many continue straight north into the Georgian Bay small craft channels.

Monday morning we went from lock 45 of the Trent (the last one, woohoo!) to the bay in Midland where we anchored for two nights. This was just a small taste of the anchorages to come which made us extremely eager to continue on. However, we would be at a “standstill” for a week for a couple of reasons: First, I had a flight out of Toronto on Thursday to join my sister in Denver for a bachelorette trip. Second, Evan’s parents would be joining us on Sunday to stay on the boat for a week, and Midland was the best jumping off point for that.

Let’s just say that coordinating airports and guests along the loop is a different kind of planning. It’s nearly impossible to time it just right, which is what put us in Midland for an entire week. For us, we’d rather be there early than rushing to get somewhere in our already very slow boat.

During our time in Midland we were able to meet up with locals to the area who have been subscribed to our YouTube channel. We enjoyed drinks at The Boathouse and got many recommendations for the weeks ahead. One of those recommendations was the mile-high sandwiches at Dino’s Deli, which Evan devoured.

While I was in Colorado for the weekend, Evan helped our buddy boat Slacker put their masts back up after having them stepped for both the Erie Canal and Trent-Severn Waterway. Apparently I couldn’t stay away from the water though because one of our bachelorette activities was a mountain hike to a (very cold) lake that I was eager to take a dip in. It took me a while to get acclimated to the altitude since I’ve been at sea level for the past four years! Also while in Denver we went to a Colorado Rockies game at Coors Field, which was especially neat for me because they have a row of purple seats that signify you are an entire mile above sea level.

Sunday morning I was up early for my flight back to Toronto where we also picked up Evan’s parents. We’re looking forward to a fun week ahead in Georgian Bay with many anchorages picked out!

If you’ve checked out our YouTube channel from these posts or even just watched a few videos, we want to say thank you. In the last week we hit 10,000 subscribers which was a goal of ours when we started our channel. When we declared that we would do the Great Loop, a major deciding factor in documenting every step was to hopefully inspire others to chase their Great Loop dreams. The dream doesn’t chase itself, so if we’ve inspired even just one person it makes it all worth it. Cheers to continuing this adventure!
