Boaters who have ever daydreamed about living a romantic life in a lighthouse now have the chance to live out their dreams. The Tawas Point Lighthouse Keeper Program is looking for temporary keepers between May and October 2018.
The Tawas Point Lighthouse was built around 1876 and overlooks Tawas Bay in Tawas Point State Park. The lighthouse is near sandy beaches, hiking and camping sites, and two shipwrecks.
The Michigan History Center is looking for volunteers to live in the Victorian-era lighthouse for a minimum of two weeks over the summer. Lighthouse keepers will be provided free lodging in the lighthouse (two bedrooms, sleeps three) in exchange for giving lighthouse tours to the public five days a week, or roughly 30 hours per week. Keepers serve in teams of two to four people, with a minimum of two at all times. Keepers may have to do routine maintenance (sweeping) and should be able to climb the lighthouse’s 85 steps daily.
