Close to $18 million has been given to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) in 2014 for projects in Michigan and Wisconsin, according to a recent article published in The Detroit News. About $3.37 million of that funding is designated for new dredging projects in Michigan, according to the article.
In recent years, the Great Lakes have experienced well-below-average water levels, causing many waterways and harbors to fill with silt. One year ago, the State of Michigan created emergency dredging programs for 59 municipal ports.
The approved USACE work includes $1 million for dredging the Black River near Port Huron; $1.54 million for existing dredging work in Grand Haven, Monroe Harbor and Saginaw; and $1.5 million for dredging in St. Joseph Harbor, among many other projects, according to The Detroit News article.
