Practical elegance from Maine.

by Gary Reich

Dang, that’s a sharp looking boat,” is what crossed my mind the first time I encountered Back Cove’s Downeast 37.

This open variation of the builder’s immensely popular 37 not only looks good, but also has an immense amount of outdoor space. It’s quick, too, with a 25-knot cruising speed and a top-end near 30 knots.

Outdoor entertaining and relaxation spaces received a lot of attention from the Back Cove design team, and their hard work is apparent in the Downeast 37’s aft cockpit and bridge deck areas. A transom walkthrough door provides easy access to the aft cockpit. The bridge deck is on the same level as the aft cockpit (read: no step up, a nice feature) and is accented by an L-shaped dining area, bench seating behind the starboard side helm, and copious amounts of glass for great visibility and lighting.

Below, the Downeast 37 features a large master stateroom with an island berth in the bow, a capable and well-equipped galley with tons of stowage space and all the cooking goodies, and an enclosed head/shower as part of a large, open-concept main salon. Light, airy and contemporary, it’s perfectly suited for a couple to enjoy extended cruises or long weekends.

A 480-hp Cummins QSB turbo diesel is standard on the Downeast 37, though many customers order it with the optional 600-hp Cummins powerplant. The optional engine provides spirited performance, consuming 22.6 gallons of diesel fuel per hour (gph) at cruising speed. Most folks will likely cruise in the 18- to 20-knot range, however, where fuel burn settles down into the 14- to 17-gph range.

Bay Marine’s Mark Felhofer summarizes: “The Back Cove Downeast 37’s 150-square-foot cockpit accommodates family and guests with ease, and there is more than ample storage aboard for all of the necessities, including water toys. The galley, stateroom and headspaces are all large and airy with a centerline island berth, a full galley and a private head with a separate shower stall. A 30 mph cruise with more than a mile per gallon performance is truly remarkable in its class, making her fast, efficient and comfortable. The Back Cove Downeast 37 is practical elegance from Maine.”
