The Bayview Yacht Club in Detroit, Michigan, has been selected as a host site for the 2024 Helly Hansen Sailing World Regatta Series – the largest and most popular weekend racing series in the country. The full series will be hosted in St. Petersburg, Florida, Annapolis, Maryland, Chicago, Illinois, Marblehead Massachusetts, and Detroit, with the championship taking place in the British Virgin Islands in October.
“For three decades, Midwest sailors have held this weekend on their calendars for competitive racing on Lake St. Clair. This year, we have a great opportunity to grow our existing successful regatta and build partnerships with Helly Hansen, Sailing World, DRYA clubs and regional enthusiasts to build on this tradition,” says 2024 Bayview Yacht Club Commodore Mike Helm. “On behalf of the Bayview Yacht Club Board, I want to thank the Sailing Committee, several past commodores, race chairs and others at the Club who have been involved in this weekend of sailing. Their input and work will be invaluable as we move forward.”
The Detroit Regatta will be held Thursday – Sunday, May 30 – June 2, 2024, and will feature several divisions of boats racing on multiple courses on Lake St. Clair. Racing is open to 21 fleets including but not limited to: Cal 25, Crescent, J/24, J/70, Lightning, Melges 15, Nonsuch, PHRF, and WASZP. The two-day distance race is open to cruising classes and racing boats that prefer a shorter time on the water.
“The freshwater sailors of Detroit represent longevity, commitment and high-level competition in sailing. Sailing World is pleased to return to Detroit this May, offering a Mackinac Race tune up for distance race sailors on Saturday and Sunday in advance of the 100th consecutive running of the Bayview Mackinac Race. BYC will serve as the host yacht club, partnering with neighboring yacht clubs to provide excellent on the water race management to pair with Sailing World’s mix of media, entertainment and fun for all ages. We welcome fleets from Crescent Sail, Grosse Pointe, Port Huron, Detroit, Cleveland, Toledo, and Chicago yacht clubs for an inclusive weekend of buoy and Distance racing to kick off the racing season in the Midwest,” adds Sarah Renz, director of Sailing World/ Firecrown Media Group.
