BoatUS Offers Tips on Reducing Plastic Waste While Boating

By August 1, 2019No Comments

Follow these three tips from the BoatUS Foundation to help reduce the amount of plastic waste in the water, which ultimately breaks down into microplastics and can harm marine animals and environments. These tips are simple and easy to follow!

The first is preparing effectively and packing for boat trips. Bring larger containers for drinks and water, and reusable silverware, plates and cups in order to limit plastic from entering the water.

The second is to make sure everyone onboard knows and recognizes sustainable practices. Your crew can keep an eye on trash and other loose materials while you are captaining the vessel or on windy, wavy waters.

The last tip is to recycle. When opening up a new boat accessory, remember to recycle the packaging. If replacing a boat part, try to recycle the old part; see if your marina or boat club has a recycling program for plastics and other recyclables, and if they don’t, ask about starting one. Also, set up a recycling bin on the boat and make sure, per tip number two, that everyone knows where it is.
