Boston Whaler 230 Outrage

Boston Whaler likes to describe its new 230 Outrage center console as having “Huge comfort and huge fishability.”

We boarded the 230 Outrage during the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show in November to see if Whaler made good on those promises.  

The 230 Outrage is outfitted in typical, clever Boston Whaler fashion. This is no more evident than at the helm seat; in its normal position it sits upright, with a flip-down back that can be used to prep bait or serve cocktails. Simply release a couple of latches and the assembly flips backward, forming a two-person lounge in the aft cockpit. There’s also convertibility in the bow, where a table can be inserted inside a U-shaped lounge to form a dinette.

Remove the cushions and table and you’ve got an expansive casting area. For more comfort there’s additional bench seating ahead of the center console unit and an enclosed head underneath it.

Comfort is a good thing, but what about that promised fishability? For starters, there’s a 16-gallon livewell at the transom and fish lockers set into the cockpit deck throughout the 230 Outrage’s length. There’s plenty of rod stowage in the cockpit, on the optional hardtop, beneath the gunwales and at the bow.

Though there are cleats and stainless steel railings on deck that would typically tangle fishing line, Whaler has recessed them throughout, eliminating the problem. Perhaps our favorite fishability feature is the helm dash, which is capable of holding up two 15-inch multifunction, fish-finding displays.

The maximum powerplant rating for the 230 Outrage is 350 hp. As you’d expect, that translates to some impressive performance figures. A Mercury 350 Verado propels the 230 Outrage from 0 to 30 mph in only 9.6 seconds. Keep the throttle down and the 230 rockets up to 54.3 mph at wide-open throttle. Owners with an eye toward efficiency will want to run the 230 Outrage at around 20 mph, where fuel burn is only nine gallons per hour, netting a theoretical range of approximately 244 miles.
