All boats imported to Canada after April 30, 2019, will no longer have tariffs placed on them. The Government of Canada recently lifted retaliatory tariffs on U.S. recreational boats entering the country placed after President Trump issued a 10% tariff on aluminum and 25% tariff on steel imported from our northern neighbor. Canada accounts for about 35% of the U.S.’s boat exports, according to the president of the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA), Thom Dammrich.
Sara Anghel, president of NMMA Canada, says in a press release that marine business took a hit and received “unintended consequences” as a result of the government placing the tariffs. “Eliminating retaliatory tariffs on U.S. boats has been the entire industry’s top priority for nearly a year,” she says. “This action is a monumental win for all of us.”
Rob Parmentier, the president of Carver Yachts, which has two of its largest dealers in Canada, told Trade Only Today that the end of the tariffs is “going to be good for our whole economy.”
