Canoe and Kayak Event Kicks Off

By June 10, 2014No Comments

Wisconsin’s sixth annual Washington Island Canoe and Kayak Event launches June 13-15. The three-day event includes a marathon race circumnavigating Washington Island, a half marathon, triathlon race, guided eco-tour, kayak symposium, expedition to Rock Island, a crossing of Death’s Door, and a keynote presentation from event director Valerie Fons. Fons, a skilled paddler and island resident, holds the Guinness World Record for paddling the 2,348-mile length of the Mississippi River in 23 days, 10 hours and 20 minutes.

The Canoe and Kayak Event offers full scholarships for its kayak symposium on Saturday to youth ages 12 through 18. The triathlon, Paddle – Bike – Run, is a new addition this year.

“Our rural, forested setting and surrounding waters make Washington Island an ideal out door competitive venue,” says Fons.

The marathon race draws paddlers from across the nation. Stand-up Paddlers (SUP) and sea kayaks are invited to register for the half marathon race, which takes off at Gislason Beach. The event also hosts two expeditions: One to Rock Island on Friday, June 13, and one crossing of Death’s Door June 14.
