Start off South Haven, Michigan’s Sesquicentennial celebration on Friday, May 10, with free food, entertainment and activities in the town’s Stanley Johnson Park.
The event begins at 4 p.m. and ends at 7 p.m. Hot dogs and peach and blueberry ice cream, courtesy of Sherman’s, will be available. Performers include The Shoreline Dance Academy, Joe Foster and Pam Chappell, the Silver Bag Ladies’ “Letters from the Frontier” and balladeer Ron Van Lente.
May 10 is the date the first village council met in 1869. They approved articles of incorporation at that meeting. The celebration of the town’s 150th birthday continues throughout the rest of the year with events every month, including the popular annual Harbor Walk at the Michigan Maritime Museum on May 30.
“We also chose May 10 for the launch because it is before South Haven’s tourist rush and we want this to be a community-focused, big ‘ole fashion neighborhood block party,” says Rosalie Plechaty, the picnic planning chair. “And the best part is that it will be free thanks to the generous financial support of businesses, organizations and individuals.”
