Modern technology meets classic style in the all-new Commander.

by Craig Ritchie

An iconic Great Lakes cruiser has returned to the water with the recent launch of Chris-Craft’s all-new Commander 42 — the first model in a new line of classically inspired cruisers produced in partnership with Italian yacht builder Austin Parker.

Powered by twin Volvo Penta IPS 600 D6 diesels that each generate 435-shaft-hp, the new Commander 42 features two cockpit areas for entertaining with teak floors, a large bow sunpad, wooden floors below deck and beautiful upholstery throughout.

From the rear swim platform, a transom door affords entry into the spacious cockpit, which is dominated by a plush, L-shaped lounge seat that spans the transom and continues forward along the port side. A lacquered table keeps cold drinks close at hand and turns this space into the ultimate spot for alfresco dining. Wide passageways and an elegant, flowing stainless steel rail to either side of the boat entice guests forward to relax on the large bow sunpad.

The salon features twin L-shaped lounge seats, a full galley, large windows for plenty of natural light, an audiophile stereo with Bluetooth and smartphone compatibility, and a 30-inch TV. A doublewide helm seat and beautifully sculpted helm station pamper both the captain and copilot alike.

Stepping below, the private main cabin includes a queen bed, a 22-inch LED TV, twin wardrobes, a safe, LED lighting, and panoramic hull windows with stainless steel portholes and blinds. A VIP guest cabin offers a queen bed, a single bed, LED lighting, a generous wardrobe compartment and a stainless steel porthole with a Venetian shade.

Once a fixture on the Great Lakes, the original fiberglass Chris-Craft Commander made its debut at the New York Boat Show in 1964. It went on to become such a success that it spawned a wide range of subsequent models, including sedan and sport fisherman editions from 19 to 60 feet.

“Chris-Craft has always sought to be differentiated, and we believe that the new Commander line is a perfect addition to our product line,” says Chris-Craft chairman Stephen Julius.
