Craftsman to Teach Boat Building Basics at Maritime Museum

By February 11, 2016No Comments

As part of its annual brown bag lecture series, the Michigan Maritime Museum will host Allen Deming, a craftsman and owner of Mackinaw Watercraft. Deming’s lecture, “You Can Build a Wooden Boat,” will be from 12-1 p.m. on February 27.

Deming began crafting custom wood canoes, kayaks, rowing boats and paddles as a hobby; but by 2007 he opened Mackinaw Watercraft to sell his creations. In 2014 and 2015, Deming’s boats were featured at Grand Rapids ArtPrize competitions.

During his presentation at the Maritime Museum, Deming will provide interested builders with some tips on constructing two popular types of home-built wooden boats. Deming will advise on the tools, time, resources and skills necessary to start building. All skill levels are welcome to attend.

Admission is $8 for adults and $7 for seniors. Museum members may attend for free.
