Duluth, Minnesota, will welcome its first cruise ships to the port for the first time in years this summer and fall, as the port city becomes a stop on Lake Superior for three cruising lines.

“We do have the Hanseatic Inspiration visiting as well as a ship with Victory Cruise Lines, they are scheduled to visit in the summer and one also in October for fall colors.  It’s really exciting because Duluth hasn’t welcomed a cruise vessel since 2013,” says Maarja Anderson Hewitt of Visit Duluth, reports WJON.

While visitors will just be stopping for the day, the news is a boom for the city, which plans to make investments and improvements for future cruising to the port.

“There’s an interest and there’s certainly an appetite right now for Lake Superior because it hasn’t been done,” Hewitt adds, reports WJON. “So all of a sudden we are seeing these cruise lines really want to get into the Lake Superior market and start offering itineraries that include Thunder Bay and Duluth and other ports.”

Starting next summer, Viking’s The Octantis, which is currently under construction, will begin cruising in Lake Superior with a planned stop in Duluth.
