Cutwater C-302 Coupe

Family friendly pocket cruiser.

By Alan Wendt

“Cutwater’s C-302 Coupe is a perfect combination of pocket cruiser that’s powered by outboards, trailerable and quite capable for overnighting or spending that summer vacation exploring some quiet, out of the way anchorages in the North Channel,” says Rich Larsen of Manitowoc Marina.

One of several designs available in the 30-foot range, this model is surprisingly family friendly, versatile and includes every accessory you’d want on a boat.
Starting on the stern, an electric grill in the transom compartment lifts up for access to the 30-gallon livewell beneath. You’ll find rod holders on the transom and more in the hardtop. When not in use, gunwale seats fold outward and you’re set for entertaining outdoors.

Inside the salon is a handcrafted buffet top that lifts to reveal a two-burner stove and a galley sink with a convection microwave below. Transforming features continue as the forward doublewide helm station converts to become a dinette. Lay both seats down and create one of three berths for two onboard. Below decks are a master and guest room, spacious head and shower. For 30 feet there is an amazing sense of privacy afforded to all parties.
The C-302 Coupe’s double-stepped hull incorporates a patented Laminar Flow Interrupter technology for smooth, positive cornering. Powered by a pair of twin counter-rotating 300-hp Yamaha outboards, speeds in excess of 50 mph are possible at wide open throttle. Ideally, you’ll cruise around 3500 RPM and roughly 24 mph with a fuel burn of around 18 gph.
Electronics wise, the helm easily handles a couple of Garmin 7612 navigation displays, 4kw radar dome, fish finder and autopilot. There is ample room for customizing. A hidden feature on the foredeck is two flush hatches that open to reveal cushioned, secure observation seats, along with a central forward lounge. When the sun gets too hot, an aft cockpit sunshade deploys, which includes a sunset shade. Step inside and cool off in air conditioning, or put the reverse cycle heat to work during fall color cruises.
Single-handed cruising is no problem with the optional bow and stern thrusters. And just when you think you’ve seen it all, the hardtop has a Kyocera solar panel to top off the AGM batteries. You may never need to fire up the gas generator and disturb the bears in one of those quiet anchorages again.
