Saturday, July 9 was the first event in a new summer series hosted by the Detroit Wayne County Port Authority that showcases maritime trade and travel on the Great Lakes. “Port Days will be a combination of fun activities along our beautiful Riverwalk — and we’ll inject a little history and information about how important the precious waterways of the Great Lakes have been and continue to be for our livelihoods here in Metro Detroit and Michigan. We take it for granted, but we owe so much of our prosperity in this region to marine transportation and it’s important to learn about it and support a sustainable future within the Great Lakes,” says DWCPA Executive Director, Mark Schrupp.

The Detroit Historical Society has partnered with Port Authority to provide artifacts and information about trade and cruising on the Great Lakes, as well as Detroit and Michigan’s active maritime history. Food trucks, merchandise giveaways and fun activities for youth complete the fun festivities.

The next two Port Days will be held on August 20, which highlights Maritime Jobs, and September 17, when the theme will be “Cargo – Ingredients for Our Economy.” Port Days takes place from 10am – 2pm at Port Detroit on the Detroit Riverwalk.
