Don’t Steal Parts From a Shipwreck!

By December 15, 2018No Comments

Two men have been ordered to pay almost $2,500 in fines and complete 20 hours of community service for taking ribbing from a shipwreck. The wreckage was that of the Metropolis, a 125-foot schooner that sank in November 1886 in the East Grand Traverse Bay.

Two divers took pictures that were then used to identify the thieves through facial recognition, boat registration and a vehicle plate at a launch site. They then admitted they took the ribbing and returned them, according to DNR Conservation Officer Sean Kehoe.
