Edmund Fitzgerald: 40th Anniversary

By November 9, 2015No Comments

On November 10, 1975, the 728-foot lake freighter Edmund Fitzgerald was lost with all hands on Lake Superior. To commemorate the 40th anniversary of the sinking, popular Great Lakes author and presenter Rochelle Pennington will share her special program “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” at a variety of Great Lakes locations.

The Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center in Ashland, Wisconsin, and the Door County Maritime Museum (DCMM) in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, hosted Pennington during the first week of November. (DCMM will have a special Edmund Fitzgerald exhibit on display from mid-December through March 2016.)

Upcoming events, which are free and open to the public, include:

• Flagg Creek Heritage Society, Burr Ridge, IL; 7 p.m., Nov. 17, 2015
• Sailing Education Association of Sheboygan (SEAS) event; Blue Harbor Resort, Sheboygan, WI; 7 p.m., Nov. 28, 2015
• Whitefish Bay Public Library, Whitefish Bay, WI; 6:30 p.m., Dec. 14, 2015
• American Geographical Society, Milwaukee, WI; 2 p.m., Mar. 6, 2016

The Whitefish Bay and Milwaukee events are both being held near the Northwestern Mutual Insurance Company offices. Northwestern Mutual owned the Fitzgerald. In fact, she was named after the company’s president.
