All you need to participate in activities put on by many museums and aquariums around the Great Lakes is an internet connection, according to Great Lakes Now. With the coronavirus forcing closures around the area, the websites and social media accounts of places like the Milwaukee Art Museum and the Shedd Aquarium are hot spots for visitors, offering free online programs, tours and activities.
The Milwaukee Art Museum along Lake Michigan is producing podcasts and livestreams, in addition to providing lesson plans.
You may have seen the Shedd Aquarium’s penguins touring the facility in a viral video posted to social media. The penguins aren’t the only ones who get to keep up with the rest of the sea life the aquarium houses; watch the museum’s “Sea Curious” YouTube series here.
If the kiddos are missing school and field trips, the Detroit Institute of Arts, Michigan Science Center, Michigan History Museum, Voyageur Island and Rotary Park and Manistee County are all offering virtual field trips.
In addition to places around the Great Lakes getting in on the online experience trend, national organizations like the National Park Service are offering live views of wildlife via webcams and videos like “Outside Science (inside parks).”
