EPA Gives Great Lakes Restoration Initiative Additional Funds

The Environmental Protection Agency has allocated $20 million in additional funds to the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative. The money will be split between several organizations and projects. The Accelerate the Cleanup and Restoration of Great Lakes Areas of Concerns will receive $7.5 million for sediment remediation and habitat restoration. The Fund Research and Development of Ballast Water Treatment Systems will get $5 million for research into ballast water treatment systems that will help reduce and prevent invasive species. Support Great Lakes will get $5 million for Asian carp and other invasive species control, as well as to restore habitats and reduce excess nutrient loads. The Support the Great Lakes Trash Free Waters Grant Program will receive $2 million to create trash-free environments for fish and wildlife, and the Support Great Lakes National Program Office will receive $500,000 for operational support.
